| 5 Steps to Self-Improvement |
|
| Sports Psychologists recommend 5 steps for improving your overall performance whatever your level may be.
1- Visualise
Imagery helps build motivation focus attention and mentally rehearse for more challenging workouts. (For more information see Imagery & Table Tennis articles in this section.)
2- Define and Set Goals
Make a list of the specific goals you want to achieve. A list is a great way to become focused. Display your list and review it regularly to make sure that you''re achieving your objectives.
3- Learn to Push/challenge Yourself
While you don''t want to risk injury, it''s important to regularly challenge yourself by stepping out of your comfort zone by practising something you don''t often practice or like to practice or focusing more on a weaker area of your game ? like playing against a chopper or doing irregular practice. Instead of resting by sitting down ''rest'' by blocking for a weaker player.
4- Be Positive
Learn to push negative thoughts (I''m too tired to work out today) from your mind. Give the kind of advice to yourself that you would give to a team member or friend. Negatives thought naturally enter your mind but be ready to transform them into a different thought more useful to the situation. For example, there is little, if anything, to be gained by losing your temper, kicking the barrier or throwing your bat around. You might enjoy the pleasure of a short term rush of blood but you certainly damage your reputation if you regularly do this
5- Pay Particular Attention to Your Technique
Players understand the importance of efficient, effective movements. Seek out knowledgeable coaches. There''s always room for improvement. Regularly revaluate your technique. It is crucial, so use coaches and experienced individuals who can point out ways to improve your techniques.
