| You may have on occasion wondered ''Lucozade or Water''? Which is better for you? Isotonic drinks (Lucozade Sport, for example) are designed to replace the salt that is lost through sweating during exercise. Isotonic drinks contain Sodium (the technical name for salt) and the sodium is absorbed into the blood from the small intestine it is accompanied by water thereby reducing the effect of dehydration because on balance more water is therefore retained.
Remember you need to replace the water that is lost through sweating because dehydration can negatively affect your sporting performance. Additionally, isotonic drinks have less than 10% carbohydrates (usually glucose; sugar) that represent a small amount of energy useful during performance over long time periods/distance.
These drinks exist because they are far more effective than just water in replacing lost sodium. In other words, they have better fluid absorption than mere water. Water traditionally the sporting drink causes you to produce more urine (more fluid is lost) and has the effect of bloating you, thereby making you less comfortable.
So the next time you have to decide, water or an isotonic drink, you?d be better placed to choose.
